Overview

Cabramatta Tan Hong Phat BBQ stands as a beacon of authentic Chinese barbecue, right in the heart of Cabramatta, NSW. Located conveniently at 6/48 Park Road, this bustling barbecue restaurant tantalizes the senses with its aromatic, freshly roasted meats—a signature experience that local food lovers and visitors alike cherish.

The restaurant’s main dishes showcase a well-curated variety of traditional Chinese BBQ offerings. Their chopped half roast duck is noted for its rich, meaty texture and perfectly crisped skin, balanced by a plum sauce that’s thick and flavorful without dilution. The pork selections are particularly compelling, ranging from tender pork crackling to expertly seasoned char siu and juicy roast pork with crackling that melts in your mouth. The subtle sweetness in the seasoning highlights the use of five-spice, giving depth without overpowering the natural meat flavors.

What sets Tan Hong Phat BBQ apart is not just the quality of their meats but the sensory experience entwined with their craft. The recently upgraded furnaces elevate the roasting process and saturate the surrounding streets with the mouth-watering scent of barbecue—especially notable during festive periods like Chinese New Year and Australia Day. This sensory signature makes the restaurant a local landmark and a must-visit for authentic, home-style Chinese barbecue.

The dining experience here is straightforward and unpretentious, perfectly matching the vibrant atmosphere of Cabramatta itself. The shop's space is modest but efficient, focusing energy on delivering consistently fresh, quality BBQ meat. Parking can be tight, especially during peak times, so taking the train to Cabramatta and walking a short distance is often the best option.

The target audience for Tan Hong Phat BBQ ranges from locals craving a genuine taste of Cantonese-style roasting to adventurous food enthusiasts exploring Cabramatta's rich culinary landscape. While some fluctuations in cooking skills have been noted, the standout items—such as the soy duck drumstick and Maryland chicken—consistently receive high praise for tenderness and exquisite marinade.

Despite some mixed reviews regarding dryness in certain cuts, the overall consensus appreciates the attention to texture and flavor balance. The combination of juicy meat, crisp crackling, and unique dipping sauces like scallion oil further enhance the meal’s appeal. If you seek an approachable yet authentic Chinese barbecue experience in Sydney’s southwest, Cabramatta Tan Hong Phat BBQ delivers a satisfying journey of flavor and tradition.

1kg - pork ribs ($28), less fatty than chunks off roast pork or bbq pork - still incredible flavour, but my personal preference, is the smaller chunks of meat from the ribs as I don't have the hunk of unchewable fat. Smell, flavour and convenience are all incredible. Recently the shop had the old furnaces removed, and an additional 2 installed (total 4). During Chinese New Year, Australia Day and Christmas, the whole street smells like pork. Great location, parking is off street. But come early otherwise no parking. Better to take the train to Cabramatta, short walk from Station. Come and have lunch in Cabramatta, without having to worry about finding a parking space.

Tasty Chinese BBQ, one of if not the busiest shop in cabramatta at Chinese New Year. The soy chicken Maryland is tender and well-marinated. I like that their siu yuk (roast pork) is juicy and not dry like some other places can be in the lean parts, the seasoning is also not overly salty (in fact I can taste a tiny tinge of sweetness to balance the salt and five-spice) and the crackling is crispy and melts in the mouth (not tough/hard). They give scallion oil with it for dipping. Roast duck is meaty and thick which means the skin is a bit fattier and crisps nicely too. They don't water down their plum sauce which is nice.

The roast pork was dry, but the soya chicken was incredibly flavourful, juicy, and tender. Make sure you visit before the dinner rush or they might sell out of the meat you want.

My friend introduced me to this shop and I was quite impressed with how fresh their bbq meat looked. I didn't realise they only took cash, so I ordered a small container of Cha Siu. The Cha Siu was really delicious and I was glad that I ordered the Cha Siu with a bit of fat on it. I'm definitely going to return soon because I hear their roast pork is amazing.
